Karen has always been an independent, hard-working young woman. Despite the fact that she was born with a visual impairment, which many might see as a hardship, Karen has always held a can-do attitude. This positive philosophy has been demonstrated throughout her life through a job she loved and a husband to whom she had been happily married since college.

Earlier this year, however, her world came crashing down around her when her husband announced that he wanted a divorce. The couple had just purchased a new home, but since Karen was unable to work more than part-time due to migraines and other medical conditions, there was no way she could afford the mortgage. For months, Karen has bounced from home to home, finding roommates when she can, but primarily renting a room in the homes of others.

Karen continues to work every day, helping others who are also visually impaired and doing her best to keep a positive outlook. What she would like more than anything is her own small apartment, a place to come home to after work. She is giving it everything she has, but is reaching the point of seeking help.

"I'm not really used to asking for help, but with the way things are now, I'm not too proud to ask," she said. "For any of you who are willing to help, I just wanted to make sure that you heard my heartfelt thank you!"

Your generous donation to The Post and Courier's Good Cheer Fund will help a local agency provide help and guidance to Karen and others like her who want to make their way in the world but are hindered by circumstances beyond their control.

Since 1927, contributions to the Good Cheer Fund have helped the less fortunate in the Lowcountry during the holiday season. The six charitable organizations sharing the funds collected are the Association for the Blind, Salvation Army, Star Gospel Mission, Carolina Youth Development Center, Coastal Catholic Charities and the Lowcountry Food Bank. Every cent of the money goes directly to the agencies, as there are no administrative costs involved.

There is still time to give this year. Donations received by noon today will be listed in the paper on Christmas Day. Contributions received by noon Friday will be included in the final 2013 accounting on New Year's Eve. Donations received after that date will be applied toward the 2014 Good Cheer Fund.

Send tax-deductible contributions to the Good Cheer Fund, c/o The Post and Courier, 134 Columbus St., Charleston, SC 29403-4800. Donations also may be made in person or online at www.goodcheerfund.com.
