Orlando, Fla. - Orlando City substitute forward Brian Spann scored the lone goal, slotting home from close range in the 74th minute, as the Lions shut out the Charleston Battery, 1-0, on Saturday night at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Stadium.

The Battery (0-1-2) started well and came close in the 24th minute after earning a corner on the near side. Midfielder Zach Prince whipped the ball to the back of the six-yard box, but forward Mamadou Diouf's sharp header was cleared off the line and away to safety.

Orlando (2-0-2) fought back and had two excellent chances just before halftime. Orlando forward Corey Hertzog almost scored in the 44th minute after a square ball from Tyler Turner that left him alone in front of goal. Hertzog met the cross, but his left-footed strike missed wide of the left post.

Moments later, Hertzog was in on goal again after a Battery defensive miscue. The ball sat up nicely for Hertzog, but he ballooned his shot over the bar from 10 yards out.

The deciding goal came with 15 minutes to play after some good build-up play down Orlando's left flank. Adama Mbuenge drove to the goal-line, then squared to the back of the box for Spann to finish past Charleston goalkeeper Odisnel Cooper.

The Battery returns home Friday for a 7:30 p.m. match against Major League Soccer's New York Red Bulls reserves.
