Sullivan's Island residents are also getting phone calls from scammers posing as officers, police said Friday.
Callers claiming to be officers or deputies have been demanding money to clear a warrant, ticket or failure to appear for jury duty. The caller tries to get the victim to buy a prepaid debit or credit card to clear up the alleged problem
Several agencies have reported the scam. Law-enforcement officers would never try to settle a warrant or ticket over the phone, according to local agencies.
Anyone who encounters the scam is asked to hang up and call their local law-enforcement agency.
