A man whose body was pulled from a creek near Stono Ferry Tuesday told a bystander earlier he didn't need any help as he struggled in the water.

Rescuers were called about 8 a.m. to 4465 Francis Yonge Way to look for a person in Log Bridge Creek, Charleston County Rescue Squad Assistant Chief Trae Wright said. The creek runs westward from the Stono River in the Hollywood area.

A homeowner said he saw an older man in the water having trouble and asked if he needed help, Charleston County Sheriff's Maj. Eric Watson said. The man in the water said he was fine until he went under and didn't resurface, the homeowner told deputies.

The coroner's office didn't release the man's identity Tuesday.

The man's body was recovered about 2:30 p.m. Rescuers didn't say why the man was in the water.
